Today I contacted the Michigan Department of Education to learn more about what I need to do to continue homeschooling our three children.  The hotline is very helpful: (517)  373-0796

  • Homeschooling is legal in Michigan
  • Parents interested in homeschooling may enroll their children at any non-core classes in any district
  • Parents must register with the state and teach the basic curriculum, but there is no mandate on number of hours taught per days per year
  • Basic curriculum consists of (but is never limited to): math, social studies, science, reading and writing
  • Children must be registered at the age of six years

The laws are fairly straight-forward and if you have questions about MI or another state, I encourage you to call your state’s Dept. of Education.
