We recently received an email from a loved one with several misquoted paragraphs purportedly out of a book written by Barack Obama.  In response, Erick took just one of the misquotes and wrote out the actual text followed by the following response to the email:

The actual quote from the book is from page 261 and is as follows: “Of
course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy
pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans,
for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and
FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of
security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of
immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific
reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has
learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II,
and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly

… And what it means, for all that like to take things out of context and
be repeatedly screwed by the government officials that both of the other
candidates will emulate as they become drunk with power – is this: Racial
profiling will allow people to be jailed with no proof, the Japanese to be
shipped off and housed in concentration camps for no crimes, and the Jews to
be slaughtered for the color of their eyes. This is no more than another
misquote that will help propagate ignorance. This man has come from more
humble beginnings than any of us, and none of us have 75,000 people at a
time flocking to hear his words… 75,000 people, not blacks, not Muslims…
Americans. Probably all of them drive to work and make America happen every
day, why would they take the time to go see this man like I and my family
did? I will tell you why. He is a true American, not a rich son of the
perfect Caucasian family. He knows about work, he knows about morals, he
knows the American people and he has the ability to do good things. And I
believe that he can make America a less systematic place to get screwed by
our own elected officials.

Now do you have the guts to send that on? Or will you stay the course and
propagate the lies.

Sincerely, an open-minded American.
