Today while driving into town, I spotted a large raptor swooping down over a field.  In an instant, the bird turned toward our van and I recognized the familiar form.  It came right at me, clawed feet extended forward in a drop-death-catch, apparently unaware of the reinforced steel cage traveling at high velocity between the powerful hunter and its prey.  Fortunately, I hit the brakes and the eagle reared back, pumping its wings for enough lift to avoid our windshield.  It was a jaw-dropping, heart-pounding experience and I feel fortunate to have spent even a fraction of an instant so near such a wonderful, magnificent creature.
