Emma and I were sitting in the rocking chair listening to music. She was enjoying a good rubdown and cocking her head to take in the music. Not in the way we might listen to music for enjoyment, but as a form of communication. Like she was trying to decipher the meaning of the tones. And then I realzied this is exactly the reason music is a universal language – we’re all listening for meaning. Most of the time we can figure it out. And just as we might enjoy a bird song without knowing its specific meaning, so migh the Emma Bird enjoy our music. Or perhaps not, but it’s a nice thought.
